ENDZ OF THE WORLD

The Art of Emergence: Unpacking the Process Behind the Prints.

Each print presented here is the culmination of a unique artistic and technological exploration undertaken during my UAL 2020 residency. My aim was to create a dialogue between historical imagery, human narratives, and artificial intelligence, resulting in truly emergent artworks.

The journey began with the meticulous creation of a bespoke visual database. I extensively tagged metadata onto scanned images of 19th and 20th-century paintings from a permanent art gallery collection, specifically focusing on works that encapsulate the spirit of the Industrial Revolution. This was then enriched with images of workers in mid-20th-century industrial factories, adding a direct human element to the dataset.

This carefully curated, closed-source database became the foundation for training a bespoke Large Language Model (LLM). What followed was a fascinating interplay: I fed the LLM stories I had been collecting – narratives steeped in the atmosphere of the 1950s and 60s – into its query box. The resulting visual outputs, which you see before you as prints, are the LLM's interpretation and synthesis of these diverse inputs.

Each print's title and the accompanying longer text beneath it represent the precise query or narrative prompt I entered into the model, offering a direct window into the creative conversation that birthed these unique pieces. They invite you to ponder the intersection of history, technology, and human experience, frozen in a moment of digital creation.
